There are some very nice places to visit near to Paradise Valley. It's about 35 minutes to get to the ocean at Playa Matapalo. It's about an hour and fifteen minutes to Manuel Antonio (the most popular national park in Costa Rica). It's about an hour and twenty minutes to Dominical (a popular surf spot).
